As I am sure I do not have to explain to you, August, September, and October are usually trucking's best months. With many companies looking to ramp up for the holiday seasons, this is usually a great time to pocket some money. However, with consumer spending still at all time lows, this is shaping up to be another bleak third quarter. Read more about industry trends.
What are you doing to grab your share of the business? It is no secret that customers have an option when it comes to choosing a trucking company to haul their freight. So what are you relying on to get noticed? Typically, the company with the lowest bid wins the freight. That brings up the question, what are they getting for their money? A lot of times, in this industry and in life, you get what you pay for. This means that if companies are only looking for cheap rate, they are going to get cheap carriers. Sure there are some exceptions to the rule, but for those of you trying to build a quality business, I'm sure it doesn't apply. So how do you stand out to get the bids and show customers that you are worth the price? The answer to that is professionalism.
In an industry that has been neglected by the information and technology wave, how do you stand out to your customer and even get a chance to bid on that freight? Many times, when I was a sales rep scouring the country for freight, I received more business from "I like the way you do business" than "well your rates were the best." Many times a customer will pay a little more for the security and reliability that your company can offer. This, obviously, works for the both of you. They get great service, and you make more money. The trick is, GET IN FRONT OF THEM!
